Larry King Calls CNN’s MH370 Coverage “Abysmal” While Ripping Networks’ Use Of “Breaking News”

The longtime CNN host goes off on the “suits” at the network.

Cable news legend Larry King had some choice words for Jeff Zucker's CNN and the network's non-stop coverage of missing Malaysian jetliner MH370 during an interview with The Rubin Report :

“Since day two they advanced nothing in that story but conjecture. It was breaking supposition; breaking speculation. It was never breaking news.

When asked by host Dave Rubin how he would have dealt with the situation if still at the network, King said, “I would have insisted, 'Let's do other things.'”

King was keen to blame executives for the current state of cable news, calling them “suits” and “accountants” who didn't “come up in broadcast,” highlighting CNN as “a perfect example.”

“The other day, while CNN and some other cable news networks were doing airplane coast to coast, wire to wire, 10 people in Washington were killed in a mudslide. There were three Americans on that airplane, 10 Americans died in a mudslide in Washington, no coverage. The G8 conference in Russia was canceled, rescheduled for Belgium with Russia left out — no mention. An enormous occurrence in Houston of an oil slick that destroyed hundreds and hundreds of miles of water — not covered. The president of the United States is in the Netherlands, he's talking to China, about trying to get China to at least stay neutral in the Russia situation — no coverage. Now that is abysmal.”

Home Is Where The Heart Is: Father And Daughters Sing To Bring Grandma Back To The U.S.

The Narvaez family has been singing together for years. Now they have joined a campaign to bring their grandmother home and help reunite 149 other families.

Jorge Narvaez / Via youtu.be

Jorge Narvaez and his daughter Alexa first rose to Internet stardom in 2011, when their cover of Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeroes' “Home” went viral, reaching over two million views on YouTube. Their notoriety eventually took them to the Ellen Show and to iTunes, where their music is available for download.

Now, joined by Eliana, Alexa's younger sister, the Narvaez family has released another version of the cover that made them famous.

This time, however, the song has taken a new meaning. Esther Alvarez, Narvaez's mother, came to the United States without papers in 1987. Twenty years later, she returned to Mexico so that her husband and son, both of whom are U.S. citizens, could sponsor her for permanent residency. Her application was denied, and she has been separated from her family ever since.

And so when Jorge, Eliana, and Alexa sing: “Home, let me come home / Home is wherever I'm with you,” they mean it.

The new video is part of a campaign that aims to reunite at least some of the thousands of families that have been separated by an unprecedented wave of deportations.

#BringThemHome, as the campaign is known on Twitter, is a network of support for 150 people who have crossed the Mexican border into the U.S. requesting asylum. Under current immigration law, such requests are one of few ways in which undocumented people who have been forced to leave the country can hope to regularize their status.

People requesting asylum have to demonstrate that they face “credible threats” in their home country before being admitted into the U.S. David Bennion, an immigration attorney who has represented some of the BringThemHome families, explained the process very clearly in this post for Open Borders.

The Narvaez family are circulating a petition to ask President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security to let their grandmother come home. You can find the petition here.

The 13 Types Of Spring Break Trips

We can’t all go to Cancun. Or even the hotel swimming pool.

The Beach Trip

The Beach Trip

Laying out in the sun, day drinking to your heart's content – a beach spring break trip is easily the most fun type. Enjoy the debauchery while you can, and try not to get too many “awesome” tattoos.

If you are poor and tired of everyone, going home for spring break seems like a sweet idea. Until you actually get there and realize that you are missing out in the prime of your youth to go shopping at Target with your parents.

Harry Reid’s Granddaughter Makes Jewelry And His Campaign Paid Money For It

Last year, the Senate majority leader’s campaign purchased nearly $17,000 in “holiday gifts” for supporters and staffers from his granddaughter’s jewelry business. The FEC has inquired about the expenditure. It’s unclear when her business’ website was last online: the website is no longer online and appears to have last been updated in 2012.

This is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. His granddaughter's name is Ryan Elisabeth Reid.

Why is this relevant? Because Reid's campaign spent nearly $17,000 on Ryan Elisabeth jewelry using campaign funds in October 2013, without disclosing that “Ryan Elisabeth” was Reid's granddaughter.

Reporter Jon Ralston first reported the connection. Reid said the jewelry was used for Christmas gifts for staffers and supporters.

After a Federal Elections Commission inquiry about the gifts and media reports about who the gifts were purchased from, Reid announced he would reimburse the campaign the jewelry money.

Lake Erie Is Currently Frozen Over And Looks Like The Planet Krypton

Fortress of Solitude or northern Ohio?

Northern Ohio, like much of the United States, has been experiencing a particularly harsh winter. But perhaps one of the most interesting effects is the freezing over of The Great Lakes at alarmingly fast rates. According to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, 4 of the 5 Great Lakes (Michigan, Huron, St. Clair, and Erie) are currently over 90% covered in ice.

The photos below were taken by photographer Chad Whaley approximately a week and a half ago at the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park and show what seems to be an other-worldly landscape of Lake Erie.

In 2014, No Two Internets Are Alike

The internet is consolidated into huge sites and social networks, but that doesn’t mean it’s uniform. Welcome to life as a constant A/B test.

Actual photo of design teams A/B testing your profile page.

I have a few rarely used Twitter accounts connected to the Twitter app on my phone. Yesterday I opened one for the first time in a while, and saw something strange. Because those accounts are inactive, Twitter seems to be serving up a different, more newbie-friendly interface.

And not just one: On another little-used account, I got yet another posting interface. In addition to the main posting interface, there seem to be two newbie interfaces: one for accounts that mostly post text and one for accounts that are used mainly to post photos.

[I would like to clarify that my @AmazonDroneReal account is purely an ironic parody of a parody Twitter account. I demand that my reputation of not being a bad-parody-Twitter-account-maker remain intact during this discussion. Thank you.]
