10 True Tinder Stories That Will Make You Want To Fall In Love Or Hide Under The Covers

It’s going down, we’re talking Tinder.

Christina Lu / BuzzFeed

My friend whom I have a massive crush on found me on Tinder — the one I made him get so that maybe he wouldn't find out what a massive crush I have on him. We right-swiped each other obviously 'cause that's friend etiquette, right? Now we just send each other ridiculous Tinder screenshots and bond over it. I was secretly pleased when his first Tinder date sucked because “she didn't think he was funny.” I think he's hilarious.

I'd been on Tinder a few months, and had a pretty good idea of the lay of the land. Two-thirds of matches respond to me, and going from the app to texting is a big move that usually takes a day or two of Tinder chatting.

So it was with great excitement that one of my matches not only offered her number up right away, but actually called me the night we matched after a few texts (warning sign No. 1). The conversation was a little forward (warning sign No. 2), but we hit it off, so I didn't think much of it.

Some texting the next day led to an unsolicited topless photo, and demands for selfies (warning sign No. 3). Now, I don't take selfies — I abhor them — but I thought, Don't be a grandpa, this is what all the cool kids are doing! So I took a photo and sent it, not knowing that this was the key with which I had unlocked a Pandora's box of crazytown.

What followed was a barrage of texts and calls at random times of the day and night, demands for more pictures, and quick flashes of anger if I did not text or call back right away. She was more possessive than all my previous girlfriends combined, and we hadn't even met! One time she badgered me for hanging out with my male friend on a Saturday, made veiled references to us being gay, and even refused to let me get off the phone while he and I were ordering sushi.

The behavior was so odd that I decided to look her up on Facebook, which led to googling, which led me to a website dedicated to women who catfish athletes. Turns out my match is a compulsive liar who used to catfish athletes (maybe still does?!). Frankly, I didn't know if I should be pumped that I was a rung down from “pro athlete” or ashamed that she figured she “needed to move on to dumber prey” and zeroed in on me. A Google reverse image search showed me half the images she posted on Tinder were not really her. I was in a total panic and we had a date set up the next day.

I canceled the date, ignored some angry texts and more fake photos, and learned a valuable Tinder lesson: You're going to have to work hard and pass some tests for me to give up my number now.

Obama To Putin: “There Will Be Costs For Any Military Intervention In Ukraine”

“We are now deeply concerned,” President Barack Obama said.

WASHINGTON — President Obama had stern words for Russia on Friday as the crisis in the Ukraine deepened.

“We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements by the Russian Federation inside Ukraine,” Obama said in a late afternoon statement from the White House.

The president called Russian actions in Ukraine “deeply destabilizing” and warned that incursions into the country by Russian forces would violate international law.

Obama suggested that Russian action in Ukraine could have a profound effect on relations between the two countries.

“There will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine,” Obama said, though he did not outline what those costs would entail.

Lupita Nyong’o Delivers Moving Speech About How She Learned To Love The Color Of Her Skin

The Oscar nominated actress spoke candidly in her Black Women in Hollywood acceptance speech about her struggle to understand that there is “no shame in Black beauty.”

Yesterday, Lupita Nyong'o won the Essence Magazine Black Women In Hollywood Breakthrough Performance Award.

And while she has fast become one of the most idolized women on the red carpet in years…

I wrote down this speech that I had no time to practice so this will be the practicing session. Thank you Alfre, for such an amazing, amazing introduction and celebration of my work. And thank you very much for inviting me to be a part of such an extraordinary community. I am surrounded by people who have inspired me, women in particular whose presence on screen made me feel a little more seen and heard and understood. That it is ESSENCE that holds this event celebrating our professional gains of the year is significant, a beauty magazine that recognizes the beauty that we not just possess but also produce.

I want to take this opportunity to talk about beauty, Black beauty, dark beauty. I received a letter from a girl and I'd like to share just a small part of it with you: “Dear Lupita,” it reads, “I think you're really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia's Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.”

My heart bled a little when I read those words, I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.

I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I was the day before. I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother's every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.

And when I was a teenager my self-hate grew worse, as you can imagine happens with adolescence. My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no conservation, she's my mother, of course she's supposed to think I am beautiful. And then…Alek Wek. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was. Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact. I couldn't believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me, as beautiful. My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden Oprah was telling me it wasn't. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn't help but bloom inside of me, when I saw Alek I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny. Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty. But around me the preference for my skin prevailed, to the courters that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me you can't eat beauty, it doesn't feed you and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn't really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.

And what my mother meant when she said you can't eat beauty was that you can't rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul. It is what got Patsey in so much trouble with her master, but it is also what has kept her story alive to this day. We remember the beauty of her spirit even after the beauty of her body has faded away.

And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.

There is no shame in Black beauty.

Confirmed: Lupita could not be more beautiful.

Proof That Mercury Retrograde Is Real And Terrible

As the latest Mercury Retrograde draws to a close, a look back at whether it was so atrocious after all. (It was.)

Via sherastrology.com

For the past three weeks of Mercury Retrograde, I kept a daily journal, assigning each day a “Retrograde Rating,” with 0 as the least Retrograde-y (i.e. the least terrible) and 10 being the MOST Retrograde-y (i.e. so bad it is almost unbelievable). That journal, with added testimony from coworkers and friends, is below.

Thursday, February 6

All day I feel crazy (LITERALLY CRAZY) and am not sure why. I listen to Nicki Minaj's “Boss Ass Bitch” 5-7 times in a row. I'm really annoyed all day, but in a way that borders on hysteria, so I giggle a lot. In the afternoon, the discovery comes to me, via Twitter: Mercury Retrograde has begun. Everything makes sense now.

Retrograde Rating: 7

Friday, February 7

My notes say “sad feelings.” Several of the emails I send on this day appear partly in green text. This is a mystery to me, and also a little embarrassing.

Retrograde Rating: 9

Saturday, February 8

Around 2:00, a friend of mine tweets that she is bored and wants to get a tattoo. I reply that I'll go with her sometime soon. Our mutual friend jumps in and says, “You guys should go TODAY.” I don't have any other plans (ugh), so I decide to get something permanently drawn on my body that I had no intention of getting earlier the same day. This uncharacteristic bravado feels planetary. We make appointments for 8:00, and I go first, and get a four-inch lighthouse on my back. It doesn't hurt as much as I remember my first tattoo hurting. I text my parents to tell them and my dad suggests that I should have just gotten a t-shirt with a lighthouse on it if I like lighthouses so much.

Retrograde Rating: 3

Sunday, February 9

On Sunday mornings I talk to my best friend on the phone. Toward the end of our 90 minute conversation, after she has told me about this horrible guy she was briefly seeing, I tell her that Mercury is in retrograde. “I didn't know that,” she says. “I have been feeling so horrible and I'm not even getting my period.”

“It's because of Mercury,” I say.

“I guess so,” she says. “I am glad I now know who to blame.”

Retrograde Rating: 5

Monday, February 10

My mom emails me to say that my tattoo, which she saw on Instagram, is a lot bigger than she thought by how I described it. “I guess you won't be able to cover it up all of the time,” she writes, “but I guess you aren't worried about that.”

My notes say “General shittiness.” Sour Patch Kids consumed: upwards of 30.

I spend half an hour on the phone with Time Warner, who the week previous told me my internet problems weren't their fault, it was the router's fault. Over the weekend the router people said it wasn't their fault, it was Time Warner's fault. Tonight when I call Time Warner the woman I speak to says it's them. They can send someone out to fix our internet. In a week.

Retrograde Rating: 9

Tuesday, February 11

I order some books online, which is good because the stack of unread books I already have on my floor could be bigger. Both of my friends whom I asked to get lunch with me said no. One of them is leaving for vacation tomorrow and says she “has to go buy bug spray.” Sure.

Representative Gchat Dialogue, 11:52 AM: “I need to leave the country I think”

Retrograde Rating: 7

Wednesday, February 12

The morning is good because I talk to a friend about nail art. After lunch I feel like falling asleep and also maybe crying. I spend a little bit reading the Wikipedia page for the Majestic 12, which normally cheers me up. Today it does not.

My notes say: “I CANNOT FOCUS WTF IS GOING ON I AM JUST LISTENING TO ANGRY GIRL ROCK FROM THE EARLY AUGHTS”

Retrograde Rating: 7

15 Mistakes You’re Making At The Grocery Store

It’s time to put this “parsley or cilantro?” question to bed, once and for all.

Evaporated Milk vs. Sweetened Condensed Milk

Evaporated Milk vs. Sweetened Condensed Milk

Evaporated milk is a shelf-stable milk with 60% less water (thus, 60% less volume) than regular milk. Stabilizers and vitamins are added, but no sweeteners or flavorings. It's often used in savory baking recipes (like bread); if a dessert recipe calls for evaporated milk, it will call for some kind of sweetener as well.

Sweetened condensed milk, on the other hand, is evaporated milk plus sugar. After 60% of the water is removed from the milk, sugar is added to create a thick liquid that's super sweet and more like syrup than milk.

IN A NUTSHELL: Sweetened condensed milk is evaporated milk with sugar added.

Can I substitute one for the other? No. Evaporated milk is thin and savory, sweetened condensed milk is thick and syrupy sweet.

Radish vs. Beet

Radish vs. Beet

Radishes and beets look similar, with red bulbs roughly the size of golf balls (though sometimes much bigger), but have totally different tastes and culinary uses.

Radishes (pictured left) have bright red skin and white flesh. They have a spicy flavor and are usually sliced thin and served raw, with the skins still on.

Beets (pictured right) have dark, reddish-purple skin with flesh the same color. They have a sweet, earthy, and slightly metallic flavor. Some people think they taste like dirt. Usually they're served roasted, as that brings out their intense sweetness, but sometimes they're served raw (shaved super thin). Either way, beets are always eaten without the skin.

IN A NUTSHELL: Radishes are raw salad veggies, beets are something you cook.

Can I substitute one for the other? No. Radishes are spicy and usually eaten raw, beets are sweet and usually eaten cooked.

What 18 Of The Biggest Technology And Media Companies Earn Per Employee

Apple makes nearly half a million dollars for each of its 80,300 employees, by far the most of any company on the list.

Chris Ritter/BuzzFeed

A company's revenue is not unlike a movie's box office gross — it has nothing to do with profitability. While revenue is the figure that usually grabs the headlines, what a company actually earns is what remains after the costs of goods, expenses, and taxes are subtracted. Profitability is, in essence, a measure of how efficiently a company operates.

Using data culled from their most recent 10-K reports, we looked at how efficiently some of the biggest media, entertainment and technologies companies are run as a measure of profitability per employee. To get the figure, we simply divided the fiscal year 2013 net income a company reported in its 10-K (companies end their financial years at different times, some in June, some in September, some in December) by the number of employees it reported.

The results were surprising even to us. We already knew that Apple made a lot of money, but nearly half a million dollars for each of its 80,300 employees is still awe-inspiring. The fact that Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox collects more for each of its employees than Google, Facebook, and Microsoft is a testament to the money-making power of cable networks and the fact that Murdoch runs a very lean organization. Similarly, Comcast and Disney are two of the biggest revenue-generating companies in media, but because their workforces are so large (136,000 for Comcast; 175,000 for Disney) they rank at the bottom of the list.

Here's a breakdown of the results from most money made per employee to least money made per employee:

Apple: $460,772 per employee.

Apple: $460,772 per employee.

Stephen Lam / Reuters

Apple spent much of 2013 fending off an attack from activist investor Carl Icahn over stock buybacks and questions from investors about its new product pipeline. Still, the company reported net income of $37 billion on revenue of $171 billion at the end of its 2013 fiscal year in September. The company said that as of Sept. 28, 2013 it had 80,300 “full-time equivalent” employees.
