Its members, all civil society groups, have helped enact a law to eliminate violence against women, overturn a legal provision threatening impunity for domestic violence, and tamp down a move to bring back stoning.

Because of Israel's limitations on movement, the Speed Sisters compete on makeshift tracks inside the West Bank — on Arafat’s former helicopter pad in Bethlehem, in the vegetable markets of Jenin, and next to a prison near Ramallah, to name but a few of their race sites as listed on their web page. And they win: In 2011, Noor Daoud became the first Palestinian to win first place in an Israeli race.

Marguerite Barankitse, a survivor of genocide in Burundi, saves 20,000 children
In 1993, at the height of a genocide in Burundi, Marguerite Barankitse tried to talk sense into the killers in her village. They decided to punish her by tying her, naked, to a chair and making her watch the slaughter of her neighbors in a church. Far from embittering her, the experience devoted Barankitse to peace, and when she escaped, she also sheltered and cared for 25 orphans. Since then, Barankitse and her organization, Maison Shalom (“House of Peace”), have cared for more than 20,000 orphans and vulnerable children. Barankitse also runs a hospital, schools, and a microfinance program.
Mummy Yuli gives Indonesia's aging trans population a cozy home
In Jarkarta, Yulianus Rettoblaut — warmly known locally as Mummy Yuli — is building a home for the aging transgender community in Indonesia, which has has an estimated three million trans citizens. Traditionally, elderly Indonesians are taking in by their own families, but trans people are often shunned and reduced to begging. Right now, Mummy Yuli's old folks' home has a wait list 800 deep.

19 Things I Learned On A Training Day For Spies
Or: how you too can fail to become Jason Bourne in just a few hours.
I learned that there is a secret spy training centre in Soho.
This is a slight exaggeration. There are the offices of a PR company, who wanted to plug a new series that's out on DVD and Blu-Ray, and to do so they hired in some ex-spies and soldiers to teach journalists how to be James Bond. I thought I'd spotted a gem of an oppotunity and took them up on this.
It turned out pretty much every other publication, all the way from the Sunday Sport to Vice to the Telegraph – had also taken up the offer. What I assumed was going to be intimate, personalised training was actually going to be a sort of corporate away day for hacks who wanted to laugh at each other.
I learned that a new TV series about spies contains a scene involving oral sex.
To warm us up, they showed us some clips from the series this was all in aid of. Not only would it get us excited about the DVD release, it would give us a flavour of the day.
The two clips featured a man walking down the street, which we were pretty confident we could do, and a woman giving a guy a blowjob, which as you can see from the above picture we were less confident about.

Jason Collins Gives Matthew Shepard’s Family A Signed No. 98 Jersey
Jason Collins wears the number in honor of Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was murdered in 1998.
Jason Collin's jersey number of choice is 98, a number chosen in honor of Matthew Shepard – a gay college student who was murdered in Wyoming in 1998 at the age of 21.
