What 18 Of The Biggest Technology And Media Companies Earn Per Employee

Apple makes nearly half a million dollars for each of its 80,300 employees, by far the most of any company on the list.

Chris Ritter/BuzzFeed

A company's revenue is not unlike a movie's box office gross — it has nothing to do with profitability. While revenue is the figure that usually grabs the headlines, what a company actually earns is what remains after the costs of goods, expenses, and taxes are subtracted. Profitability is, in essence, a measure of how efficiently a company operates.

Using data culled from their most recent 10-K reports, we looked at how efficiently some of the biggest media, entertainment and technologies companies are run as a measure of profitability per employee. To get the figure, we simply divided the fiscal year 2013 net income a company reported in its 10-K (companies end their financial years at different times, some in June, some in September, some in December) by the number of employees it reported.

The results were surprising even to us. We already knew that Apple made a lot of money, but nearly half a million dollars for each of its 80,300 employees is still awe-inspiring. The fact that Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox collects more for each of its employees than Google, Facebook, and Microsoft is a testament to the money-making power of cable networks and the fact that Murdoch runs a very lean organization. Similarly, Comcast and Disney are two of the biggest revenue-generating companies in media, but because their workforces are so large (136,000 for Comcast; 175,000 for Disney) they rank at the bottom of the list.

Here's a breakdown of the results from most money made per employee to least money made per employee:

Apple: $460,772 per employee.

Apple: $460,772 per employee.

Stephen Lam / Reuters

Apple spent much of 2013 fending off an attack from activist investor Carl Icahn over stock buybacks and questions from investors about its new product pipeline. Still, the company reported net income of $37 billion on revenue of $171 billion at the end of its 2013 fiscal year in September. The company said that as of Sept. 28, 2013 it had 80,300 “full-time equivalent” employees.

On Monday evening, Cook County narcotics officers and members of the Sheriff's Electronic Monitoring Unit went to Kowalski's house to check his residence, after narcotics officers received information that Kowalski may be trying to cook methamphetamine, according to the Cook County police department.

This is the second time in less than a year a meth lab was found in his home, police told NBC Chicago. He was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine manufacturing materials, and possession of methamphetamine precursors, all felonies; and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

While the lab was not active, twelve jars of psychedelic mushrooms were also recovered, according to the Cook County Sherriff's office.

7 Vintage Jello Recipes That Are Surprisingly Delicious

I give it six months before Bloody Mary Aspics show up on brunch menus in Brooklyn.

Vintage recipes can be truly upsetting. But the food editors at Southern Living want you to give Jell-O molds a second chance. Their argument, presented in these seven recipes from their newest issue, is that with fresh ingredients and modern flavor combinations, congealed salads can be satisfying and delicious. Sorry but they are right so get on board.

How To Make Spaghetti Scallion Pancakes

Or, “How To Make Spaghetti You Can Eat With Your Hands.” Check out more easy spaghetti dinners here .

Graphic by Chris Ritter / Photos by Macey Foronda

Serves 4

Recipe by Rebekah Peppler

INGREDIENTS

1 lb spaghetti

2 bunches scallions, green part only

4 eggs, beaten

2 tablespoons hot sauce

Neutral oil (such as canola)

kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

PREPARATION

Cook spaghetti according to package directions, until al dente. Drain through a colander.

Thinly slice 1 tablespoon scallion greens and reserve for garnish, then slice the remaining scallion greens into ½-inch pieces. Combine the cooked spaghetti, 4 eggs, 2 tablespoons hot sauce, scallion pieces, salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat 3 tablespoons neutral oil (like canola) until hot but not smoking. To test heat, drop a small piece of spaghetti in. If it immediately starts to sizzle and bubble, the oil is hot enough. If the spaghetti immediately starts to turn a dark brown, the oil is too hot. Use your hands to form a flat, 4-inch round out the spaghetti mixture. Add the spaghetti pancake to the hot oil, reshaping it with a spatula in the skillet if it starts to spread too much. Cook, 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crisp on both sides. Remove finished pancakes from the skillet and drain on a paper towel-lined plate, then season with salt and pepper on both sides. Repeat until all of the spaghetti mixture has been used, adding more oil when needed.

To serve, garnish with thinly sliced scallions and additional hot sauce.

15 Extraordinary Pictures Of Abandoned Buildings

Photos and descriptions from urban explorer Sylvain Margaine’s magnificent book , which looks at forbidden and forgotten places.

Villa Zanelli Savona, Italy.

Villa Zanelli Savona, Italy.

Villa Zanelli, named after the owners, was built in 1907. A few years later, it was handed over to the nearby city of Milan, which used the land as a campsite. During the Second World War, the Red Cross moved in and converted the premises to a hospital, later specialising in heart disease. In the late nineties part of the building collapsed and put an end to these activities, so the place was abandoned.

Governor's Tower, Barcelona, Spain.

Governor's Tower, Barcelona, Spain.

The “Governor’s Tower” is a building of eclectic architectural features, thanks to a series of modifications made over the centuries by the owners. Built on the outskirts of Barcelona in the 16th century, it was originally the residence of the Governor General of Catalonia before it was taken over from the 17th to the 19th centuries by the counts of Santa Coloma, viceroys of Catalonia. It was then acquired by the banker Antonio Borrell Folch. He commissioned Guitart i Lostalo, a modernist architect, who added two square towers flanking a Gothic bridge to the entrance. On his death Borrell bequeathed the estate to the order of Friars of the Pious Schools, dedicated to teaching poor children. The buildings were run as a school until the late Seventies. As they became unfit for purpose they were put to other uses. The Borrell Institute closed down permanently in 2000. The property was resold but has since fallen into a state of neglect.

Seaview Hospital, New York City, USA.

Seaview Hospital, New York City, USA.

The former Seaview sanatorium, located in Willowbrook on Staten Island, New York, covers 130 hectares. This vast complex of thirty-seven buildings was constructed between 1905 and 1935 in Colonial Revival style. It was planned on a north/south axis, separating patients according to gender. Although it was originally intended to accommodate tuberculosis cases, the range of patients gradually diversified as children and people with psychiatric conditions were hospitalised there. Seaview, unequipped for modern healthcare practices, was obliged to close down its facilities little by little. Despite designation as a City Landmark in 1985 and inscription on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, Seaview Hospital is now in very poor shape.

Castello di Sammezzano, Reggello, Italy.

Castello di Sammezzano, Reggello, Italy.

Sammezzano castle was built in the early 17th Century in the Tuscan town of Reggello, 19 miles from Florence. Its remarkable Moorish architecture is a succession of domes and arches in an array of colours. In the 19th century, Marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona renovated the interior galleries and added to their general eclecticism. On former agricultural land around the buildings, he designed a vast park filled with exotic plants. The castle was auctioned in 1999 to be converted into a luxury hotel complex, but later abandoned and inevitably fell prey to passing looters.
