Twitter: The Console War Is A Sad Stalemate

Further proof the “console war” is currently a tepid pillowfight.

The ongoing “console war” between Xbox One and Playstation 4 is so far a pillow fight between two presently toothless expensive products with no worthwhile original software. Despite alternate pre-release predictions of dominance for one (a multimedia extravaganza!) or the other (the true gamer’s device!), and despite a current lead in total sales for PS4, the two boxes are for now “locked” in a struggle that is basically theoretical, neither possessing a single game to take a meaningful advantage.

Need proof? How about this graph measuring share of Twitter mentions between the two consoles from shortly before the Christmas rush until yesterday:

Via Frac.tl

Built by the digital agency Fractl, this graph reflects data from Twitter’s API and reveals a public that can't really decide on which console to talk about about, especially post-Christmas. Some days: Xbox! Some days: Playstation! Neither device has generated nearly enough enthusiasm nor controversy to dominate online conversation.

Here's the hourly breakdown, which you can zoom in on:

Three People Charged In Philip Seymour Hoffman Death Investigation

Officers raided an address in Manhattan around 7 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a tip that a dealer who sold the late actor heroin was there, reports said. Update: An autopsy performed on Hoffman Monday was inconclusive.

Robert Galbraith / Reuters

New York City police arrested four people Tuesday night who are believed to be connected to the drugs found in late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s apartment, multiple news outlets reported.

Two law enforcement officials told the Associated Press at least one of the people arrested had the actor's cellphone number.

The New York Post reported officers raided an address in lower Manhattan around 7 p.m. after receiving a tip that a dealer who sold Hoffman heroin was there. Two men in their fifties, one woman in her twenties, and another man in his twenties were taken into custody and questioned, the report said.

More than 350 bags of heroin were recovered during the search at 302 Mott St., the New York Times reported, citing a law enforcement source.

On Wednesday, three of the four were charged with drug offenses, one related to heroin possession with the intent to sell and two with cocaine possession. The fourth person questioned wasn't charged.

Hoffman, an Academy Award-winning actor, was discovered lifeless in the bathroom of his fourth-floor Manhattan apartment Sunday morning with a syringe stuck in his left arm. Dozens of glassine envelopes containing heroin, some still full, were later found in his home by police.

Initial lab tests performed on the drugs confirmed the substance in the bags was heroin, but the tests did not find any trace of fentanyl, a powerful narcotic used to treat cancer patients that has recently been linked to dozens of deaths.

The night before his death, Hoffman withdrew $1,200 from an ATM at a supermarket near his New York City apartment while talking to two men with messengers bags, NBC News reported, citing police sources and bank records. The money was not recovered during a search of his apartment.

Hoffman had undergone treatment for addiction before, checking into rehab as recently as last year. In a 2006 interview with 60 Minutes, Hoffman said he would use “anything I could get my hands on.”

An autopsy performed by the Office of the New York City Chief Medical Examiner was inconclusive. Toxicology tests are still pending and an official cause of death is yet to be determined.

“The cause and manner of death for Mr. Hoffman are pending further studies,” the medical examiner's spokeswoman Julie Bolcer told BuzzFeed.

George Clooney’s Revenge On Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Involves Fruit Baskets And Matt Damon

And that’s only phase one of his plan.

Kevin Mazur

Today at a SiriusXM Town Hall event with the cast of The Monuments Men, Clooney revealed that he has already completed phase one of his prank rebuttal for the jokes made about him at the Golden Globes. Apparently Matt Damon was unwillingly dragged into it — here they tell the story:

Jess Cagle, moderator: You said you said that you were going to get even with [Tina Fey].

George Clooney: I’ve already started the ball rolling. I used Matt [Damon], sorry.

Matt Damon: Okay. Just a little background. I'm sitting at my house, minding my own business and the biggest two fruit baskets you've ever seen in your life show up at my house. They have envelopes attached and one says “Letter Number One” and “Letter Number Two.” I open letter number one. Now they made some jokes about me at the Golden Globes.

GC: They called you a garbage man.

MD: Yeah, they called me a garbage man or something. So I open the thing and it says “Dear Matt” and you know, I did episodes of 30 Rock with Tina and I did SNL with her way back when. She says in this letter, “I thought you of all people could take a joke but listen, we're both really sorry…” and it's this long apology letter signed “Tina and Amy.” And then I go to letter number two and it says, “If my chance you didn't send us that letter and it was from George Clooney — please let him know that you gotta get up a little earlier in the day to fool a couple girls like us.”

GC: She said “we're grown-ass comedians.”

MD: We're grown-ass comedians.

GC: Step up your game.

MD: My wife's going “What is going on? These two things take up literally our entire kitchen. And I said …George got stationary with my name on it.”

GC: I sent her a letter saying, Dear Tina, listen, it's from Matt, and it just says, “look, it sounds hypcritical because I laughed at the jokes about George and Leo, but you know, that's sort of what people think about them. But when you called me a garbage man, it just seemed like low hanging fruit, it just seemed like an easy joke. And you know, I don't want an apology, I don't want anything else, I just want you to know that my kid now calls me the garbage man.”

MD: That's so brutal.

GC: So then she said, you know, “step it up.” So I wrote Matt and told him what I'm doing next. And I just said, that's the appetizer and what's coming now, the main course, it's pretty brutal.

MD: I'm out of the way of all of this.

GC: I know, he's out now. He's out. But this was one where I actually, I have it in my hotel room set, and I've taken some pictures and stuff, and I was sitting there and I'm like, if I do this, this is downright dirty. I actually have to think if I should actually do it.

JC: Wow, that must be bad.

GC: Yeah, it's bad.

MD: It will take him all of five seconds to think about it.

GC: I already sent them.

LGBT Activists Launch “Cheers To Sochi” Parody Site After “Hijacking” McDonald’s Hashtag

“McDonald’s did all my work for me,” said the activist behind CheersToSochi.org .

Site by LGBT activists (left) and original site by McDonald's (right).

After taking over McDonald’s “Cheers To Sochi” social media campaign on Twitter last month, LGBT activists are continuing their push to demand official sponsors of the Sochi Games to denounce Russia's anti-LGBT laws with the launch of a parody website, CheerstoSochi.org.

McDonald's asked customers to use the #CheersToSochi hashtag on Twitter Jan. 21 to send messages of support to olympians competing in the games, and opened CheersToSochi.com (the URL now redirects to aboutmcdonalds.com) as a hub for “sending cheers.” But within days, LGBT activists and other critics swarmed the hashtag, using it to demand official Olympic sponsors, such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola, denounce the host nation's discriminatory policies.

“For a while, I was thinking about a blanket campaign that would hit all the sponsors and then McDonald's did all my work for me, they launched 'Cheers To Sochi,'” said Scott Wooledge, an LGBT activist at Queer Nation NY. “We successfully hijacked 'Cheers To Sochi' from McDonald's. [CheersToSochi.org] is a way to continue the campaign.”

By Jan. 24, McDonald's apparently discontinued use of the hashtag and never snapped up the .org version of the domain, Wooledge said. He purchased the domain for $10 about two weeks ago and told BuzzFeed the site parodies McDonalds' official site in both name and design and will serve as an aggregator for directing criticism to the Olympic sponsors on social media.

Taking over the conversation on sites like Twitter and Facebook is a more effective way of getting the attention of the sponsors, who have so far ignored online petitions with similar demands even though they have hundreds of thousands of signatures, Wooledge said.

“This is a way to have a conversation,” Wooledge said. “It has functionality as well in that it makes it easy to share things on various social media sites. It links to all the sponsors and all their social media pages.”

Users are greeted with a message upon landing at the site reading, “Send your cheers to your favorite Sochi 2014 corporate sponsor or the International Olympic committee. They've all betrayed the ideals in Olympic charter. How do you feel about that?” The site includes links to the sponsors' social media properties and memes that could be used along with the hashtag.

Wooledge estimates about 90% of tweets including the #CheersToSochi hashtag are people protesting the sponsors' silence on the anti-LGBT laws or even protesting the Olympics outright.

When it was clear the #CheersToSochi conversation had shifted to the controversy over the propaganda law, McDonald's issued a statement on its website, saying in part, “We are aware that some activists are targeting Olympic sponsors to voice their concerns regarding the Russian LGBT legislation. McDonald's supports human rights, the spirit of the Olympics and all the athletes who've worked so hard to compete in the Games. We believe the Olympic Games should be open to all, free of discrimination, and that applies to spectators, officials, media, and athletes.”

Around the same time #CheersToSochi launched last month, Wooledge created a video parodying a classic Coca-Cola commercial, by adding clips of violence perpetrated against LGBT people in Russia. The company showcased a new commercial briefly featuring a gay couple during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

BuzzFeed has reached out to McDonald’s for for further comment and will update this post if the company responds.
